PCOS: Recognizing the Early Warning Signs

What is PCOS?

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormone problem for women who are of childbearing age.  They develop many small cysts on the ovaries which cause issues such as irregular periods, infertility and others.

There is no single cause of PCOS. There are a variety of factors that play a role. This includes genetics, obesity, higher levels of androgens which are male hormones, insulin resistance and inflammation.

Early Warning Signs:

If you suffer from any of these problems, then you may have PCOS:

  • Irregular periods:

A normal menstrual cycle is between 22 and 35 days. PCOS patients, experiencing PCOS and irregular periods, have unpredictable cycles, and fewer cycles per year. This is because women with PCOS have a lack of progesterone. Their periods may also be excessively heavy or light.

  • Excess hair growth:

PCOS is a hormonal condition that produces higher levels of androgens and this makes women experience excess hair growth in abnormal places. This is most often seen on their face, arms, back, chest, thumbs, toes, and abdomen.

  • Hair loss:

Another hair related problem that women may suffer from is male pattern hair loss. It is the thinning of hair on the top of the head or hair recession. This condition may be more severe in middle-aged women.

  • Difficulty in getting pregnant:

PCOS is one of the most common causes of infertility in females. These fertility problems arise due to a lack of ovulation.

  • Obesity:

Half of PCOS affected women experience weight gain or are obese. This is due to insulin resistance, lack of physical activity and other reasons.
